The 2013 Traffic Safety Culture Index by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says 28 percent of drivers reported being so tired that they had a hard time keeping their eyes open while driving their cars during the prior month. That is a surprisingly huge number and quite frankly, scary! We want you safe on the road, so we compiled a few tips to keep your eyes open and your mind focused on the road without dozing off.
Drive with a Passenger
When you can, drive with a passenger. This will give you the opportunity to talk and stay alert and also the option of taking turns driving. If you’re planning on driving through the night, take a friend with you so you can rest your eyes for a couple of hours.
Sunflower seeds require focus to get the seed out of the shell. This will keep your mind busy instead of letting it drift off into space. Research shows that eating sunflower seeds while driving is much more effective than drinking an energy drink.
Take a Break
Every 100 miles or two hours, pull over and stretch. This will clear your mind and get rid of any aches your body may have from the long drive.
Listen to Music
Don’t just listen to any type of music, listen to music that keeps you moving or singing along. Soft or classical music can cause you to become drowsy. This is the perfect excuse to blast that Taylor Swift song that has been stuck in your head.
If all else fails and you don’t think you can make the drive, pull over. It’s better to be safe than sorry when you’re sleepy and driving at night. Tip: Wal-Mart does not monitor their parking lots at night, so feel free to camp out in a parking space for the night until you’re fully rested.
